Before

Before: the original bar — teal stools, a drop ceiling and dated slate tile.
Before: the back bar and service station as they stood before the phased renovation.
Before: the original restroom — the room that became the monstera-mural wahine suite.
Before: dated tile and surface-mounted fixtures throughout the original restrooms.
Before: the ballroom men's room as we found it — checkerboard tile, a heavy stone vanity and dated fixtures.
Before: the vanity wall that became the monstera-mural double vanity.
Before: the ballroom women's room at the start of the phase, ahead of the chevron-slat walls and new vanity.

The Challenge

A members’ country club knew its clubhouse could be more, but needed someone to show what “more” could look like. After joining the club’s House Committee, we designed the entire clubhouse at no cost — a single, upscale Hawaiiana vision meant to prove what the space could become. What started as one restaurant renovation grew, phase by phase, into a full reimagining of the club.

Our Approach

The first phase was the proof: a complete gut renovation of the restaurant and two restrooms, designed and delivered on a one-month timeline instead of the three it would normally take. It set the tone — warm woods, greens, and coastal light — and showed the membership what was possible. The ballroom followed, redone in four weeks. We designed engineered acoustic ceiling panels finished to read as ordinary drywall — quiet craft the eye never notices — alongside two luxe commercial restrooms and a one-of-a-kind chandelier we designed and had fabricated, for roughly half what a comparable prebuilt fixture would have run. The third phase went wider still: a new member-services desk, the KG deck, six renovated restrooms, and the Mirror Bar — the club’s new social heart. For that phase we also designed a full suite of custom furniture in-house, manufactured to order overseas and delivered by container. Across every phase we led the design and construction management, coordinating the licensed trades from first sketch to final walkthrough.

Materials & Finishes

• The Mirror Bar — a hand-tiled blue bar front under custom woven pendants • Custom rope-and-rattan lounge and dining furniture, designed in-house and made to order • Engineered acoustic ceiling panels, finished to read as ordinary drywall (ballroom) • A one-of-a-kind chandelier, designed in-house and fabricated to order (ballroom) • Board-and-batten and laser-cut monstera feature walls • Woven pendant lighting, marble-top vanities, and warm stone tile throughout the restrooms • An upscale Hawaiiana palette — warm woods, greens, and coastal tones

After

The Mirror Bar straight on — a lit bottle display over coastal-blue tile, framed by woven pendants.
A refreshed entry vignette — console, round mirror, and French doors leading into the club.
The Wāhine (women’s) restroom lounge — pink monstera wallpaper, a built-in bench, and a bright vanity.
One of the club’s six renovated restrooms — a double vanity beneath woven pendants and a monstera feature wall.
Another restroom — olive board-and-batten in a chevron pattern, louvered stall doors, and a marble-top vanity.
A restroom detail — a laser-cut monstera privacy screen over warm stone tile.
Custom Wāhine signage — the monstera-leaf motif carried through the space.
One of the chairs Lanikai designed in-house for the club — woven rope over a rattan frame, made to order and shipped by container.

The Result

What began as a single restaurant renovation became a clubhouse transformed — restaurant, ballroom, bar, decks, and restrooms, each phase raising the standard for the next. The Mirror Bar gave members a new place to gather; the custom furniture and Hawaiiana detailing gave the whole club one cohesive, unmistakably local identity. It stands as our commercial flagship: a members’ clubhouse reimagined, phase by phase, and managed end to end.
